Mac called the meeting to order at 7:30.
The minutes of the last meeting weren't mailed out. From now on they will be emailed by the secretary.
Art Lathrop is going to resign because he is President of Norcal now.
Bea: Rafe will get his brochure together some time soon. He will work 50% on skating, 25% on skills like puckhandling, and 25% on teamwork. Focussed on skating.
LIsa read a thank you note from Bob Barrows.
Mac said he will talk to Frances Cohen about the name of the newsletter The Bladerunner. Since Bladerunner is the name of a cop with a license to kill replicants on sight in the eponymous movie, maybe it should be changed.
Discussion of the name Bladerunner --
Kim: It's a long tradition. It goes back to the start of the club. It's arbritrary to change the name.
Sue: Frances is doing all this volunteer work. I remember that we voted to keep the name.
LIsa: We are the Oakland Bears. Bladerunner reminds me of San Jose, the Blades.
Kim: Bear Facts reminds me of a porno club.
Mac: I've been around six years and last year was the first time I saw any circulation of the Bladerunner. Let's let the members decide.
Mac handed out "California AMateur Hockey ASsociation Volunteer Application Authorization Consent Waiver and Release", a three page form which asks whether you've ever been arrested. Or convicted. And that we're all to be fingerprinted. Discussion of how to collect such forms without them being tampered with.
Mac discussed Board Insurance. It's not very expensive. Dave Durham said that if errors and omissions coverage is available and not expensive we should get it.
Motion by Dave Durham that we investigate the availability of errors and omissions coverage thru USA Hockey and the President is authorized to purchase it if it is priced reasonably. Seconded, voted, unanimous.
Lisa: Tryouts ---
Let's give the parents a handout during registration which has the practice schedule, Board members, and rink location information.
Andre: I'm going to get a sheet done, where I can get the kid's name, his jersey number, and where he played last year.
Same jersey number both days.
Need one person in charge of locker room keys.
Everybody dresses in locker rooms, no exceptions. PUt on skates downstairs (even if you arrive dressed.)
Jackie Berman and I are preparing the letters and material for the NHL, for the grant.
People have been calling to see if we're going to have an equipment swap.
Eric Anderson and Tim Harding and Jon Dayton coaching the Mites.
Peewee A Danny tHibault, Brian Rogers, Jason
Peewee B Bob Barrows
Bantam A Dale Simpson
Bantam B ?
Peter Batchelor and Peter Everett (just moved here)
Midget B Harley Earl and Matt Downs
Trying to get three coaches per team; we had a meeting with them last Monday to give them some guidelines, like practice is for the players, not the coaches; no parents or friends are allowed on the ice; coaches have to be extremely positive with the kids, nothing negative; if you don't know the kids first name, don't call them. Most of the coaches will be here to help with tryouts.
Going to warm up the goalies and have a scrimmage. That's it, for tryouts.
Sunday nite a List is going up, which will have A players that have been selected only. If someone played last year, they don't go on the list until they try out. Players still on vacation will have to do two days of tryouts before they can be selected. If a player has been selected, he has to make the decision.
At the A level, you play to win, not equal ice team.
At the B level, equal ice time.
Parents will be told that if they have a problem with a coach, they have to go to Andre first. Don't go to the coach.
Any problem with a player will be handled that same day. Same with a coach. (within 24 hours, that is)
No parents in the locker room before games. (except mites)
Mites don't have to go to every practice, nor to every game. We need to get a mite team for the program. Equal ice time, and as many coaches as I can find. It's the same price as inhouse. Can play on both.
Midgets can go on the ice with the mites, for role modeling.
Squirts: Rennie Tanguay and Chris Slater, coaches.
(In response to a question) No policy on goalie rotation; it's up tot he coaches.
There will be goalie coaches. When the goalie coach goes on the ice, he's in charge of the goalies. Joe Noto won't go on the ice; he's out.
Coaches will have scrimmages.
There are three coaches per team, so that if one of them isn't here, there will still be coaching.
I looked for people who would be positive with the kids, and the kids would look forward to practice.
(Bea asked if Andre would be on the ice) I'll fill in. If I get too many complaints about a coach, he'll be out of here.
Last year was a disaster. Parents complained because they didn't even know who was going to run the practice, and that's not right.
The key is every practice they should concentrate on the goalies; without the goalies you don't win.
Every practice, everybody skates. And it's a controlled scrimmage. If a kid fools around, he gets kicked off the ice.
Mite coaches don't want any money. Nor peewees.
Peewee Bantam and Midget, I want to take a team of the best players in the area and go to a couple tournaments. I'll coach them. All the kids in Norcal. Play the Rep team, maybe go to Canada. We'll play A teams, not AA. We'll have a chance to win, and a good experience. I'll pick the players, and somebody else will make the other arrangements.
(Rick mentioned that there are a lot arrangements to make, if you make a special team.)
Managers answer to me (Andre), not to the Board.
No individual stats are to go out; just the team standings. Stats go to me.
Dress code: No ties required; just a nice shirt.
NO fighting. Anybody fights, they get dressed and they're gone.
Kids don't leave the ice, without talking to a coach first.
(End of Andre's remarks)
LIsa: Tryouts (cont'd)
8:00 AM starts tryouts. Five stations.
LIsa gave out a printed handout about the stations and who was assigned to do what. Rius, Kinder, Cranney, Griffin, Goldman, Farias, Loyola, Dang, and Sharlyn McIntyre are on the list for early assignments; Durham, Woods, Lathrop, Berkman are to collect the pullover jerseys. Donna Davis and Richard Katz are Vendors.
Game slots this year areSat 1:45 3:30 and 5:15 sunday 11 AM and 12:45
Lengthy discussion of how much to charge for the merchandise (shirts and hats etc ) that the club has to sale.
Wear your kid's jersey to tryouts.
Next meeting is SEptember 16, 1998. 6:30 pm
Kim made a financial presentation, and passed out copies of Sources and Uses of Funds for FY ending 5/3/98. The Board expressed a strong interest in keeping track of Parent Particiipation fees. We have a list of who has a deposit to carry forward. Assessments will be made. We also have a list of forfeitures.
Mac: What's a good meeting time?
Lisa: Wednesday is tough for me.
Mac: Start the meeting earlier, so it's done before practice is over. How about Wednesday 6:30 SEptember 16?
LIsa: Battle by the bay "trophies" will be plaques, and they will be more generic.

Mac called the meeting to order at 7:37
Minutes of last meeting: Mike Farias is the alternate norcal rep; mac is the rep. Otherwise approved.
Bea: Rafe Abar is skill coach from Chicago. Many teams in Illinois hire him to teach technical skill like skating puckhandling shooting very specifically speed and skating. He's the best. Just watch Bryce and Frank. He is putting together clinics over one weekend maybe in California. In Arizona. He needs two one adn a half hour slots. Forty kids max skating skills. He wants airfare plus $1200. Plus airfare and $400 for the helper. He's the best I've ever seen teaching. I mentioned to him our low level of skills here. Bryce said it was wonderful to remember what it was like. "I can see what Bryce is missing," he told me. I have to tell you that Andre might not be with me on this one. Andre is not exactly pushing on the skills. The first thing Rafe said to me is Is Andre French Canadian? The idea in Canada is to put the ki\ds on the ice and the best will get the skills. Because they have so much ice time, just spray your grass. And there's an ice rink every fifteen minutes. It's all Canadien's way. If Andre or the Association refuses, I'll go somewhere else to get him to come. Dublin, Fremont, said immediately they would be interested.
Mac: Did you talk to Andre?
Bea: No. I've been begging Andre for two years.
Sue K.: We;'re talking about 4 and a half hours per group.
Bea: Forty in each group. Two one and a half hours on the ice. Ask Bryce.
Bryce: He's the best coach in the world.
Art: Is there any ice time for that?
Mac: 4 and a half hours times $225.
Bea: It's impossible to do with one association. I said "Rafe, we need a video."
Mac: This is probably the only facility.
Bea: He goes one place one day, another place another day, because he knows that one place can't have all the ice time. Maybe if the Board is with me, then Andre will give me the ice time.
Sue K: If we have eighty kids and times $20 is sixteen hundred. that's the 1200 plus the 400 airfare, ice time, $4225 total. About $53 per kid. If we charge 75 dollars, it's a fundraiser.
Bea: I was in chicago, and he's my friend, and he said send Bryce to me. He said, I don't have my video ready, because they're filming right now. Frank said the two kids who went East to try out for a team were rejected right away. They did not do well in Canada.
Mac: You and I need to sit down and talk to Andre. I think he'd be more receptive than you think. The big issue is still ice time.
SueK: Last year during Christmas vacation we had nothing.
Bea:
Cyril: You might find some at Berkeley.
Bea: All of our kids at Illinois do private lessons before going to school.
Mac: Let's sit down and talk to Andre.
Cyril: I think it's a great idea. If you can get the ice you should do it.
Art: As great an idea as it is, you can end up with schedule conflicts. Eighty kids signed up in advance, you'd be able to do it. You might be left holding the bag if you don't.
Mac:
Bea: How much did we pay for Laura?
Mac: It's 255 dollars per kid.
Bea: We're talking about seven and a half hours.
Mac: Anything beneficial to the kids is something we want to do.
A Quorum just arrived in the person of Rick Boudiette. Approx 8 PM.
Bea: PHoenix, Denver -- But I can find out when he is going to be out here.
Vote to approve the minutes. seconded. Passed.
Mac: First agenda item is compensation for the coaches. I think anything for the effort makes somebody feel better.
Kim: More obligated, too. Psychological obligation.
Sue K; Fifty dollars per month?
Kim: Budget I handed out -- there's nine teams.
Richard: I move that we give everybody a gas card for fifty bucks.
Art: IF we gave everybody a fifty dollar a month expense reimbursement, prorated if somebody quits in the middle of the month --
Mac: What's been the standard policy if I'm the coach and I'm going to Fresno?
Sue K: Different arrangements.
Mac: Should this be an individual club deal?
Art: LImit the reimbursement to head coaches who do not have children on the team. And we pick up the lodging for the coach, again if he does not have a kid on the team.
Kim: We ended up giving Bob Barrows ..
Rick: That was a special thing.
Kim:
Mac: I think these guys need to be compensated. If they're going to Fresno, or Santa Rosa.
Sue K: Roseville too.
Kim: What do you think about the parent coaches?
Several: Agree.
Kim: Fifty bucks, and if there's going to be turnover, it's probably going to be in the first two months. So $100 after tow months.
Wood: Pay them at the end of the month.
Discussion of this.
Durham: Make a motion that we authorize fifty a month for each head coach Sept thru April 98-99. Seconded by mark. Unanimous with Rick Boudiette abstaining.
Done. Coaches Will Get Money.
Art: I move that non parent coaches will get reimbursement in Fresno. Up to Sixty dollars per night for Required overnight in connection with league play.
Second by David D.
Discussion of this: No meals, just hotel. It's peanuts, maybe three hundred dollars. A flat seventy five to cover room and meals.
Art: Motion that we reimburse non parent head coaches flat seventy five dollars for trips to Fresno.
Seconded by Sue K:
Unanimous. Rick abstained.
Mac: Lisa made up a schedule of what to do at tryouts. A Draft showing who works at the stations: Reg, try outs, payments, Jersey order, Volunteer Signup.
And ASsistants to Andre
Bea: I didn't get my reg package.
Discussion of this. A survey of the Board memebers prsent seems to show that three out of twelve didn't get the package. Aug 10 is the deadline for the cheaper rate.
Mac: Merchandise discussion : Hold up til next meeting. PHil has some new stuff. Phil is PHil from DGH outfitters.
Mac: Fundraising Corporate donations: Anybody here who wants to head up a committee, or by themselves?
Rick: Last time we did this was 1989. That was the yhear of the earthquake. We got aced by the Red Cross. There were three of us that went thru the Chamber of Commerce register. Biggest thing is getting a list of the chamber of commerce.
Kim: Lisa had a couple of years ago, that she was the person at
Siemens who received such requests.
Mac: Inside this club itself we have people who respond to such reqests.
Discussion of this: Patches on Jerseys; jerseys; hats, jackets. No beer or alcohol companies. chevron has a policy only capital items like sticks and helmets. United Way, via designated donations. Don't want to hit on anybody twice like if Battle by the Bay already went to Clorox, we don't want to go to Clorox twice. It's the first vice president's position.
Kim: Sometimes we have sent out an appeal for donations to club members. To be used for sponsorships for the next year.
Richard: Are there kids who corporations could sponsor who aren't beginners?
Mac, rick, Art, Kim: Yes.
Mac: About the welcoming committee. Andre thinks its important. This is something that we would have in a room at tryouts, to provide a welcome for people who are new, for example.
Mac : Kevin Constantine coaching -- I'd like to see the club pick up what Norcal doesn't pick up.
ARt: I move that we reimburse half the cost of up to nine coaches to go to Professional Hockey Camp in San Jose.
The coaches are designated by the Hockey director.
SEcond by Wood. Unanimous.
Kim: Francis isn't necessarily going to do the bladerunner next year.
Bea: We were going to change the name.
Kim: We've gotten pretty organized with respect to the parent participation. I've got a list here of people who are going to forfeit. Anybody wants to be taken off, let me know.
Rick: Refereee clinics scheduled?
Cyril: Would you call him?
Next meeting is Aug 12 at 7:30.

Mac: We voted at the last meeting 5/27 to vote at this meeting to ratify Andre as Hockey Director. Art moved that we do that; second.
Discussion:
Kim: Head coach and hockey general manager?
Head coach and hockey general manager. approved. Unanimous.
Lisa Rius and Jacquie Loyola arrived.
Need a Norcal rep. Art can't do it.
Mac appointed Mike Farias as Norcal rep.
Cyril nominated Mark Burkeman and David Durham as board members.
Discussion of who's a board member:
Chris Rotolo, Lance Warren, Bob Seymour are not board members
seconded
vote; unanimous. They're on the board.
Kim: nominate Emil as regristrar; nominate Mary Griffin as accounts mgr
seconded and unanimous
Pres: Discussion of Bob Burrows refund. as a scholarship. Kim can write a check. It's all been passed.
Kim: I'll get that out to him.
Pres: Secretary issue -- Richard keeps the minutes. = recording secretary. Need a corresponding secretary.
Tina: There wasn't anything of that type to do. The meetings were the same time every month.
Richard: That didn't work. People didn't come to meetings.
Lisa: Everybody is on email. Except six people.
Richard: So who needs a postcard? six people. "'All except six."
Sue: nominate Richard for Secretary. I'll do the postcards.
seconded.
Unanimous.
Pres: Registration. We're pretty close to putting the reg package together, based on last year's.
What's the price we put on the registration?
Parent's participation fee?
Andre: Keep the costs down as far as you can. we need more players to come in here.
Discussion of income and expenses; do we need to raise fees, or can we keep them down?
Kim gave a rundown of the highlights of his Budget spreadsheet:
Kim: Everybody has a copy of 1998/99 Budget spreadsheet? Counting no of players is not straightforward; players play half a season for instance. We had about 125 players last year. How many should we budget for? On line 9, we figure 8 teams of 16 players = 128 players. I split them up based on last year 20 pay in advance 93 by the month 15 at the sibling rate. That's $118k. MIte team 12 players at $500 = $6000. Reg + tryout fees = $20k last year, should be same. Five scholarships (four last year) should be
Bea: Andre thinks we should give half scholarships.
Kim: Parent participation $2500. Interest is negligible. $153k is our est total income. Our ice expense is est $111k. Mite program, est 1 practice and 1 game a week, comes to $13k. Ice is $250 hr and 10%off for early payment = $225 hr. Nor cal and USA hockey about same as last year . Up in the air items: Tournament entry fees for CAHA and Norcal, we don't know how many teams will qualify. Referee fees$6k. Other things, like late Game Sheets. Other uses of funds: Travel and expense stipend for coaches, est $4k = $500 per coach, eight coaches. This all balances out; est income = est expenses.
Pres: We don't have to add extra mite game slot.
Kim: we're on the borderline, if we have the same number of players. And we've have the same number of players for years now.
Pres: Does everybody feel comfortable with these figures enough to use them? $135 for early registration returning members, $160 for later returning members, $50 for tryout only credited to early reg for new members.
Jacquie: $40 for parent participation is really low. We should charge more.
Pres: There are two ice times for each age group for tryouts.
Rick: New members always got a discount on registration.
Pres: We should start practice right away. Some other clubs donn't start until later. We'll lock kids in.
Andre: When the notice goes out to last years members, if you could say "if you can't attend tryouts, notify us that you intend to come and you won't be here." It will help us to select the teams. two thirds of the team will be picked at tryouts. Last year we put everybody on teams and then kids were sent down; that was a mistake. There are some kids who might not make it on Sunday. Some kids who show well in practice and not at tryout still might make it.
Bea: I don't like that idea.
Tina: You have to set a cutoff date. Sept 1.
Andre: We dont want to give a final roster until we have to. Kids might be moving in to town.
Emil Rius: If you change over 20% of a roster, you have to re register the team.
Pres: Thru the first weekend of tryouts, if andre only sees five players, that's all you pick?
Andre: The rest will have to wait. Only A or B players will be picked. And put on the list.
Bea: If you're not on the definitive list, and you want to continue past Sunday, you have to pay something else.
Art: If you have not committed, we need a fee for those additional sessions.
Andre: What percentage of kids last year tried out and didn't make it? If you don't register by Sunday or Monday, Everybody has to pay a fee.
Kim: $50 gets you Sat and Sunday.
Andre: If they want to play Sat and Sunday, and then play Mon and Wed, let them pay another $50.
This was discussed as a Continuation Tryout Fee.
Pres: We've decided on --
Art: What about later in the season? Can somebody show up later in the season and pay $50 and play twice?
This was discussed and generally agreed to be agood idea.
Andre: May I suggest that two or three members form a welcome committee for new people? To sit down with people moving here, make them feel at home. first week of tryouts is very important. Have coffee or something,, so they can just talk.
Tina: Are all these fees deductedfrom the registration?
Pres: Yes.
Andre: They shouldn't keep paying the twenty five bucks. We'll know that night, and we should let them know that they should make a decision.
Bea: Two fifty dollars maximum per kid.
Kim: We as a Board need to delegate to Andre and Mac the right to determine and charge these fees.
Motion to do that, second, Unanimous.
Discussion of Parent Participation:
Lisa: We need new blood and new ideas.
Pres: The $40 carries on and carries on, right?
Lisa: Yes, you're charged again.
Art: At registration, somebody determines if you met you're quota of volunteering.
Tina: I suggest $150 parent participation fee.
Bea: I suggest $100.
Art: That's cash up front.
Kim: we could send everybody a bill before the tournament, and then if they don't show up, they have to pay. We tie it more explicitly to doing something.
Tina: Team manager is a hard position to fill.
KIm: People leave the club, they don't ask for the $40.
Mike B: Team manager is different than voluntering for Battle of Bay.
Lisa: How about forty up front and sixty later? And then the form has to be signed by the team mgr.
Pres: Do we need a motion for that?
Bea: the sixty will be collected February?
Pres: We're in agreement that we'll charge $100 parent participation, forty up front, and a bill for sixty that you can get signed off by the team manager.
Pres: What's our refund policy? Is that in the bylaws? If you left by a certain time, what is due?
Art: You should include it in registration.
Kim: Dues are prorated. We simplified it. When somebody withdraws, we just prorate their annual dues .
Tina: We agreed to refund everything the first month except the $50 tryout fee and the USA hockey fee $22.
Sue: If you don't make the team, all the money can go into the inhouse program.
Art: we shouldn't lose money or make money on tryouts.
Pres: At this point we have the dates, the tryout dates, the practice dates, the rates, the tryout fees, everythinhg we need to complete the tryout information. What else do we need?
rick: We should say what the schedule is. when we start, what the post season schedule is, that post season play is covered by the Team,
Pres: Until the end of the Norcal B tournament
Rick: In the past this has been the end of March of beg of april
Pres: We don't pay for ice team past March
Andre: I think if I could make a suggestion, if the club has the money, I think the club should pay for the same amount of paractice as during the year, if the team goes to the State. It's good for the club. If they want to practice more, they should pay for it. If they have the money. The club should pay for the team to represent them.
Discussion of format of the Tryouts Announcement.
When we mention that Andre is the Director, have it say Former NHL Player.
Battle by the Bay Discussion: We bought public session ice team so the atmosphere would be purely hockey. How much money does Lisa Rius need to get the process started? Special Trophy costs about $2500. Teeshirts .
Kim: I'm just concerned about losing money.
Pres: We need to get Lisa some money so she can get going on it. We need to establish a budget and I'll work with Dennis so at least we'll have the expense figured.
Bea: can you get some money from the teams, in advance? Now they will be less reluctant, "Let's do that again!"
Next meeting is July 15, 1998. 7:15
Adjourned at 9:25
The picnic is Saturday June 13 ten to four. At lake Chabot.

Minutes of the Meeting of May 27, 1998
Presiding: Mark Mac MacIntyre, President of the Club
Members and soon-to-be-Members Present: Lisa Rius; Jacquie Loyola; Cyril Allen; Sue Kinder; Art Lathrop; John Wood; Mark Burkeman
Others Present:
Mac called the meeting to order at 7:35.
Mac presented the Agenda for the meeting.
One vacant spot on the Board. David Durham and Mark Burkeman nominated. Two Board members delinquent on their dues. What is the action that we have to make to vacate a spot that way?
Art: Do the bylaws speak to that?
Mac: Yes. ARticle 3, #2.
Art: That would mean they would no longer be a voting member. I don't think that automatically means they're suspended from the Board. Two unexcused absences you can be automatically terminated.
LIsa: One only attended three meetings all year. Another
Sue: Who takes attendance?
Lisa: Secretary.
Mac: Let's make this simpler.
Art: I think
Mac: Can we vote on voting on two members of the Board now which would put us at 21?
Art: What's the maximum number fo Board Members?
Mac: We have seventeen now.
Art: We'll notify the others that they're being dropped.
Mac: My motion would be that
Lisa: I move that we nominate David Durham and Mark Burkemanas board members.
Seconded by Art.
Unanimous by affirmation.
Mac: At this point let Andre talk about what he would like to do as Hockey Director.,
Andre: I'd like to tha nk Cyril. Coaches quit, that was not an easy situation. When I was asked if I would get involved, I thought the club should be involved in fundraising. Somebody else shoudl be involved with the hockey. I wrote some things down. Let's go down the list.
1. as Hockey director, I would like tot select all the coaches. I'll talk to anybody who want to coach.
2. Select the divisions and the players on the teams. So the coaches have teams they can coach.
3. Mite team A and B.
4. In charge of discipline.
5. Players will play until I get written notice that dues not paid. Verbal not enough.
6. It's not my decision or the board's decision whether a team goes to a tournament.
7. Report to me team managers.
8. No individual stats available to anybody during the season.
9. complaints come to me first, I'll deal with the coach.
10. You can fire me any time; I can resign any time.
Some discussion of number 8.
Questions: Cyril: Any compensation to you Andre or to the rink
A: No. voluntary.
? Notice Period?
Art: Sounds very good. I support this.
Andre: think about it now. It's not a trick, I'll make the decisions on hockey matters.
Art: According to our bylaws, that's the way it's supposed to be. Hockey manager runs the hockey program.
Andre: At some point, I want to get an assistant, inc ase something comes up, I have to go away for a week. find somebody who feels the same way I do about the kids.
Lisa: No problem. I think you covered all the problems we've had with the club. this is like a second job, it takes a lot of time. we just concentrate on the fundraising. we have to get new jerseys, because the Boston Bruins don't use those jersey. We should provide thse new jerseys. Trivalley had to provide new Jerseys.
Andre: To me, I feel it's already costing too much. Jerseys are the least of the problem. The Mite team should only practice once a week and play once a week. I had 25 on teh inhouse. These little kids are too tired after school. You have to build a program from down up. We need to have a mite team and charge them half a s much. Full ice.
Art: Ice time equal?
Andre: A team, not equal ice. There's nota single player at the A level who should not play, but not necessarily equal. We had a problem with the double A midget parents. I told them that there must be a meeting with the parents before the season starts, so they understand that. The one thing we're not going to do, is not have everybody know what's happpening before.
Art: One team should n't get more practice time than antohter.
Andre: There was no problem with the way practice was run last year. Maybe one Tuesday one team gets the whole ice, then the other team. We need to consider that we don't want kids on the A team just so we can play for the ice time. All those issues shoudl be addressed up front. No gossip.
Cyril: Spell out that roster decisions may be made later. Spelled otu in reg materials.
Laurie Dang:
Andre: I'm going to keep in mind that you have to pay the bills here. I would like the people to know that two thirds of the players willl be selected at tryouts. So kids won't try out on three different clubs. We shouldn't make them wait. The other thing is that whatever y ou send out, say that any questions about hockey, ask me. Not dues. Anything else, ask me.
Jacquie: I have a problem with the goalie situation on the Midget a team. Mark was brought in late, and Ian became a practice goalie. We hate to see something like that happen. He made the team, he's on theteam, we struggled as a board with that. It was sticky.
Andre: We can't go back, to what was done and not done. Josh should have been kicked out a long time ago. That was done with. We need to go forward, to make sure that whoever plays in the program is going to get good practice time,
Jacquie:
Mac: In Ian's situation, it did help him.
Andre: That's why we want to take the politics out of it. I wnat the right to disciipline player. Coaches will be disciplined as weell.
Art: Norcal has ben looking at Tier 2 teams. Have you thought about those issues?
Andre: We're not ready for it. It's too much money, and it's not the caliber you are goin to see in Minnesota. I believe more in a Junior team than a Tier team.
Cyril: Pam effort to get together a junior team, have four teams, and have a division that plays against division from down south.
Andre: Problem with that is that junior team has to practice 3 times a week. That's five to seven thousand dollars a year. I would like to see Oakland, Berkeley, trivalley form a team; san Jose forms a team; Sacramento forms a team; they drive an hour to play junior hockey. Some of these kids will be in college. Just play weekends to keep the cost down. Our double a midget team was not a tier team. We played the rep team ten times and beat them nine times.
Lori: Do you start it and build it up?
Andre: form a junior b team, or junior c team; then you can put together an allstar team that could play down south team. Ken Yackel and his rep team are doing it as a moneymaker.
Emil Rius: It's not so expesive for the ice time.
Mac: One of my goals is if we can do this, half the kids at the other teams are looking for a place to play. We have an opportunity because Andre's well known. We have the nicest facility. We can handle a lot more kids. Let's eliminate the hockey decisions. So I am in favor of going in this direction. It will save us headaches and time.
Burkeman: Other teams I've been involved in have professional staffs.
Jacquie: Is this a decision that we can make a s a board?
Andre: I'm going to leave, so you can make a decision.
Lori: are you in favor of dryland training?
Andre: No. Twice a week on teh ice, and the kids have homework. The kids and the coaches shoulen't commit themselves to it, and we don't have the facilities.
Cyril: How about compensation to the coaches? We have non parent coaches. How do you feel about it?
Andre: I don't have a problem with qualified parent coach. As far as paying coaches, I had make a suggestion, that it makes the coach committed more; it makes it easier to convince his wife or girlfriend that .... And a few extra dollars to send a present to someobdy who's getting married or something like that. the pay makes it easier for me to tell them things. Adn you have to figure a way to make sure they really get fifty bucks (if it's fifty) and not thrity five, with taxes or whatever.
Mac: Code of conduct?
Andre: I haven't seen yours.
Sue hands him our Code of Conduct.
Andre thanks everybody and leaves.
Lisa: I think it's a good idea. I make a motion that...
Lori: don't we have to wait til next week.
Sue: Seven days written notice of a meeting.
Mac: Bylaws are not a big part of what went on last yar.
Sue: Article 11 on page 9 says Hockey general mgr makes selection of coaches. (reads more) The things Andre said are alreaddy in our bylaws.
Art: I suggest that we take a vote and ratify it at the next meeting. I suspect there will be alot of support for this. when i first joined this club, the general manager (Paul Richey) absolutely ran the hockey. He never cam to a board meeting. We got away from that as we got a more active board. The pendulum swings. there's nothing radical about what andre is proposing.
Berkeman: We should
? where's the part about notice of board meeting?
Emil: Andre's position with the rink?
Mac: One reason is I want to start notifiying people. We need to start getting the information out.
?Do it and see if anybody objects to it. Straw poll.
Richard: Do we have a quorum?
Cyril: Yes.
Mac: straw vote. Raise your hand if your're in favor.
all hands up.
David Durham: I make a motion that we waive notice, for this meeting.
Art: Second.
Wood: Which board members arent' present? Who will we offend?
Mac: Beatrice, Kim, Rick, tina, Mary, Mike farias is for it. don't know about Maksymovich.
Unanimous to waive notice of a meeting.
Sue: I've noticed at Board meeting, there were lots of little discussions. If I bring up a point, I want to feel like we're going to conduct oursleves like professionals, as we have this evening.
Mac: Was the revised Bylaws really approved May 1998?
Discussion of this by all.
Changes were minor.
Mac: when it was voted on, was there a quorum?
David: Bylaws shoudl be followed.
Mac: We've decided
Art: I move that we accept Andre's program as outlined tonite and appoint him as Hockey general manager.
Burkeman: second
Unanimous
Lisa: Let's stick to the Agenda.
Mac: I'd rather not see any tabling of anything. Stuff just snowballs.
Lori: What issues?
Mac: I remember lots of times.
discussion of this.
Mac: Try out dates. Early as possible. August. Get information out early enough.
Lori: Early Conditioning camps. You'll get people to see our facility and our coaches. Great draw to our program.
Mike: Is something the Hockey Mgr decides?
Lori: We have to pay for it. We have to have meetings deciding to pay for it.
Next board meeting is ...
Mac: Do we need a meeting next week if we can get our information out ..
Lori: Aren't there rules about recruiting?
Art: The rules are fairly liberal. You can't initiate contact with players that you don't ahve any reason to have any contact with. Concerns about recruitment are decreasing. Territories are less of a concern.
Mac: What are the earliest you have heard tryouts at other clubs?
Lisa: Trivalley last two weeks of August. Westbay Sat 29 of August. They have seven teams already. San Jose 15 16 of August. Teams all set up. Trivalley still sends me al the stuff. This is waht we need to do.
Mac: Is 17th early enough?
Cyril: Coaching clinics before that.
Discussion of when to have conditioning and tryouts.
Mac: When to have practice ice time = tryout ice time.
? Rumor of Wednesday and Friday.
Mac: I will push for Tu th.
Missed some discussion. approx 8:45.
Art: Norcal wants ice slots.
Mac: Somebody shoudl help me with ice time and price negotiation. Ice time is going up. Trivalley is saying they'll take any ice time they can. Priority is adult ice hockey, the club, then inhouse, then .... Any problem with Friday nite ice?
Lisa: Rules about tryouts.
Art: You need to have a tryout jersey, and you don't get a jersey with out paying your money.
Discussion of tryouts. This is up to Andre.
Mac: Practice time -- start a little earlier , over a little earlier.
David: Hebrew school to consider.
Mac: Communications to members.
Lisa: Need to get the word out better.
Art: Internet site.
Lori: We could put the minutes on there.
Mac:
Jacquie: Mike Maksymovich kn ows how to put the stuff on the site.
Lisa: Rink.
Richard: Motion: Oaklandice.com/OJHC.html
